Summer is here and it’s time to have fun outdoors but remember that hot weather can present some challenges for our four-legged companions. This month I thought I’d share some important tips that will help keep your pet safe! It really all starts with understanding that dogs, unlike humans, have limited options to beat the heat because they don’t sweat; instead they release heat through their paw pads and by panting. Consult your groomer or veterinarian about options regarding clipping your dog’s long coat and the use of animal-friendly sunscreen if the coat is thin. Dehydration can be a huge problem for pets during the summer months weather too so be sure your pets have unlimited access to fresh water. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day and try to avoid hot pavement which can burn paws. If you’re bringing your pet to the beach or pool keep a close eye and if necessary look into a doggie preserver. Most importantly, have a great summer, animal-lovers.
