Hi animal-lovers!  I thought I might dedicate this month’s column to celebrating some fun and scientifically-backed facts regarding why you should on a pet, aside from the fact they are adorable!  For starters, if you like to laugh, you’re in luck because studies reveal dog and cat owners laugh more over the course of the average day.  In fact, pets make us happier in general; just a glance at our beloved animal friend can release the feel-good chemical oxytocin.  Pets also help us to be a healthier humans, for instance kids who share a household with a dog show lower rates of developing asthma and allergies.  And more than half of owners who walk their dogs on a daily basis meet the federal guidelines for moderate or vigorous exercise.   Overall, research proves that pet owners have lower levels of depression and stress and higher levels of self-esteem and happiness.
